Sara Umga is one of the most toughest trek routes in Himachal Pradesh and is recommended for all those people who are looking for some hard core trek. The journey takes one through the lush green Vally of Parvati to Lahul.

How to Reach Rumsu Base Camp?
  • Take a bus from New Delhi/Chandigarh for Manali and get down at Patlikuhal[20 kms before Manali]
  • Transport options are readily available from Patlikuhal for Rumsu village. Sumo – 700 INR while small car – 500 INR
  • Once at Rumsu village follow the trail for Kailashrath Treks base camp
  • Note: If you are staying already in Manali, take a direct cab for Rumsu village[26 kms]

Day 1 – Reporting at Rumsu Base Camp in Manali
  • The first day of the itinerary is kept for rest and Acclimatisation. To reach base camp on time, one should board a bus for Manali from Delhi by 6 PM. Get down 20 kms before Manali at a junction called “Patli-kuhal”. Transport options are readily available from Patlikuhal for Rumsu village [11 kms] . [Sumo – 700 INR while small car – 500 INR]
  • Once at Rumsu village follow the trail for Kailashrath Treks base camp. At Base camp, members will undergo a registration process and then head for Acclimatisation walk. After the walk participants will be distributed Trekking bags, Microspikes( for better grip on slippery snow), Gaiters(to prevent snow entering your shoes) and Trekking Sticks.

Day 2 – Jeep ride from base camp to Tosh, and trek to Bhudhaban | 9,180 feet | 3 hours
  • The trek starts from Tosh village and goes along the Tosh Nala via some dense pine forest to Budhaban. The trek takes around 3 hours from Tosh to reach the meadows of Budhaban. Overnight stay in tents at Budhaban

Day 3 – Trek from Budhaban to Sharam Thach | 10,500 feet | 4 hours
  • This part of the trek takes around 6 hours to complete, bringing you closer to the tree line. The first part of the trek goes over meadows and rhododendron clusters while the second part goes over the scree. One can also see the Tichu glacier and apparently there is a bridge that allows one to cross over to the Tichu Nala. Overnight stay at Sharam Thach

Day 4 – Trek from Sharam Thach to Shamshi Thach | 12,630 feet | 5 hours
  • The trail from Sharam Thach climbs further up over scree and ends at the foot of Tosh Glacier, where the streams are spread estuary-like. The trek starts with a steep climb from Sharam Thach with some patches of snow on the way, along the ferocious and raging Tosh river. Descend further for Shamshi Thach campsite, which is at the base of the valley. To the north of Shamshi Thach lies Tosh glacier and to the south, Kullu Makalu peak. Overnight stay at Shamshi Thach

Day 5 – Trek from Shamshi Thach to Kuta Thach | 13,450 feet | 5 hours
  • Kuta Thach is a beautiful meadow below Sara Umga Pass, next to the Tosh glacier. The trek for Kuta Thach starts with a climb up the scree and glacial moraines. The trek is long and moderately difficult but is compensated by the magnificent view of tall mountains that Kuta Thach offers. Kuta Thach also leads to another trail taking one towards Animal Pass. Overnight stay at Kuta Thach

Day 6 – Trek from Kuta Thach to Sara Umga Base | 15,420 feet | 6 hours
  • The trek to Sara Umga Base starts with a descent to the Tosh valley and leads to a climb through a rocky path leading to Sara Umga Base camp. The base camp lies just 200 meters below the pass thereby making the traverse easy for the next day. Overnight stay at Sara Umga Base camp

Day 7 – Trek from Sara Umga Base camp to Sara Umga Pass. Descend to Chota Dhara. | 12,470 feet | 9 hours
  • The trek starts early to get a head start in crossing the pass in good weather. The climb to the pass is steep over -snow
  • From the pass, one gets fabulous views of peaks in both Lahaul valley as well as the Tosh valley and other surrounding by-valleys. Descend on the other side of the pass to reach the Putiruni. The descend happens by walking towards the left to skip all the crevasses coming in between
  • The trek from Putiruni to Chota Dhara is easy with not too many ups and downs. Cross Chandra river via bucket bridge system at Chota Dhara. Overnight stay at Chota Dhara

Day 8 – Drive to Manali and Departure
  • After morning breakfast we will start the jeep ride to Manali. We will reach Manali by 3 PM. While booking return bus tickets, book after 7 PM volvo from Manali to keep some buffer time as there are chances of traffic while driving down towards Manali

Mandatory Things to Carry
  • Medical Certificate (signed by a registered MBBS doctor)

  • Rain gears are mandatory for all participants.

Pandemic Measures
We will be following below measures to keep our fellow travelers safe during this pandemic -
  • Participants should get masks and sanitizers of their own
  • People falling under the age group of below 16 and above 50 are not allowed (having their health as our concern)
  • Participants with any symptoms of cough/cold/fever are advised to stay back
  • We ensure that the place of stay is well sanitized and safe for travelers

You Should Carry
  • Identity proof
  • Face Mask
  • Trekking shoes – good trekking shoes with a good grip and ankle support. Avoid carrying the sports shoes
  • Minimum two layers of warm clothes – two to three layers of jackets including the padded and fleece jackets
  • Trek Pants – two to three trek pants are required. Jeans/Denims are not suitable for trekking
  • Sunglasses – it is essential because sometimes the humongous amount of snow could lead to snow blindness
  • Thermals – top and bottom thermals are important
  • Water proof hand gloves – avoid woollen gloves as it might get wet while touching the snow
  • Cap – sunrays are quite strong at height so keep a cap to protect yourself
  • Socks – keep 3-4 pairs of sports socks with a pair of woollen socks especially for the night time
  • LED torch/ Headlamp – it’s a Must
  • Ponchos/Raincoats – snowfall and rain are very common at high altitudes and poncho and raincoats could help in avoiding getting wet. If possible, carry a backpack cover to protect your belongings.
  • Toiletries – it is mandatory
  • Snacks – like dry fruits, light biscuits, energy bars, etc.
  • Medication – personal medication is also required
  • Water Bottles – carrying your own good quality water bottle is a must
